CATALUNYA’S PARLIAMENT VOTED AGAINST BULLFIGHTS!

28 Jul

For us in Spain it’s a mircale!!! The catalan polititians voted today in Barcelona against the bullfights in Catalonya. This is a big step into the right direction, and the second state in Spain rejecting the bloody tradition. 1991 already the Canary Islands eleminated the bullfights in their region.

We are looking forward to more anti-bullfight declarations all over Spain and the world.

“CAMY”, AN OTHER BADLY INJURED GALGA NEEDS HELP!

9 Jul

This is CAMY, a young and very shy galga found near seville. Thanks to Susi from Jerez and her friends, the dog could be operated but unfortunatly the long fine screw seen on the x-ray moved inside the joint and caused the dog severe pain.
The pain made CAMY not using her leg so the muscles atrophiated completely and we decided to  take CAMY in.

She is already in the clinic in Barcelona where she will undergo surgery today. We desperatly need help with the payment of CAMY’s suergery as well as the financing of t he Jerez galgos blood tests.

Please help us to help the galgos and donate to: pro-galgo@total-barcelona.com or to our UK pro-galgo bank account

THANKS!

THE VETTEAM AT WORK

THE VETTEAM AT WORK

ETN Germany and Perros de Catalunya organised a campaign where over 5oo dogs and cats could been castrated. thausands of unwanted litters have been avoided thanks to this surgeries.

Not only the abandoned streetdogs but also the dogs of the nearby villages could be operated free of charge. to our surprise, spanish people accepted the offer to operate their dogs quiet well and the press and tv also was interested in the german-bulgarians vetteams work.

Our galgos,, the ones saved a few days earlier from Jerez killing station, also have been brought to the shelter in Jumilla (Murica) where the international vets took very good care of them. 11 dogs operated in less than 2 hours, amazing!

The surgery minimal, the dogs and cats recover in less than  2 hours and the very next day they can make a normal life without the need of medication or vetchecks, specialy interesting for street dogs and cats. the animals get a 72h deposit shot of antybiotics and a strong painkiller so they do not want to lick the wounds.

The PRO-GALGO dogs are recovering prfectly well from the surgery and so the dogs saved from the killingstation in Jerez are nearly ready for adoption

Thanks to all for helping the galgos! MUCHAS GRACIAS A TODOS!

THE FIRST JEREZ GALGOS ARE OUT OF DANGER!

30 Jun

WANDA; la galguita yaya

WANDA; a probably over 10 year old breeding bitch, a lovely kind animal. she was the first one we loaded

In a very fast trip of less than 36 h we went for the first load of the jerez galgos in danger to be pts.  We brought 11 galgos (3 females and 8 males) plus the 2 minpins you see in our drivers arms. the mother had been abused as breeding bitch and when not productive anymore given away, the baby could not be sold as in spain people want very very young puppies and once over 4 month old, they are nearly impossible to sell. I had no take them because we were afraid that somebody adopts only the pup letting the old mum alone.

FRAN con las dos pinchers
Our driver FRAN and the 2 minpins!
Unfortunatly most of the refuges who offered to take galgos in, have chickened out in the very last minute so 6 hounds plus the minpins stayed with us, 6 went to a friends shelter. As they were mostly male dogs (other rescue groups had saved ONLY all the females and left a very shy female and a very sick old one to die in the killingstation). this kind of selective animal protection is obviously normal here in spain due to the international rescue groups that prefere female galgos.

hello from spain

PRO-GALGO will go for the 28 galgos in Jerez killingstation named GESSER but we
need the money to pay the trip and the first vet care
we have found already 13 foster families or refuges in Spain (as they are not
ready to travel yet abroad) to help with the galgos but still 15 need to be taken in until ready for adoption
we can go to pick them up in jerez next week but we need about 800eur for the
transport and another 900eur for the tests and vaccines (34 eur test per dogs,
8eur for the 7x vaccines)
and of course we need help for the general vet care later on, but first we need the money to transport, test and vaccinate them so they are not a danger for the refuges and fosters who take them in.

FAMOUS FACES AGAINST CRUELTY TO GALGOS.

10 Jun

Our dear friend Sandra Baas did it again! She managed to get famous singers and other artist to pose on behalf of the plight of the galgos. Please help Sandra’s association BaasGalgo to help the hounds. For furter information pls read below.

http://www.sos-galgos.net/wp-content/uploads/poster_campanaa3ok_baja.jpg

Soraya, Fernando Tejero, Romay, Rosa Montero, Alaska, Vaquerizo and Carlos Mario Rodriguez are all part of the image of the “Together for GALGOS” campaign. A campaign to promote awareness against cruelty, neglect and abandon of Galgos

Madrid, May 12, 2010 – The “Together for GALGOS” campaign is an initiative of the Baas Galgo Association  (www.baasgalgo.com) a solidarity organisation that has been fighting for many years in favour of animal rights and welfare. The campaign’s principal objective is to expose the tragic reality of Galgo abuse in Spain. “Together for GALGOS” wants to communicate a message to the public encouraging them to stand together to combat the Galgo problem and to ask for support from individuals, the private and the public sectors and other organisations to help the Galgos. To this end, the campaign will be given maximum exposure in the media, and be posted in strategic locations so as to attract everyone’s attention.

The campaign images show celebrities and members of the general public united by a common goal. The solidarity theme of “Together for GALGOS” has brought together professionals coming from very different fields: singers, actors, media presenters, veterinarians and students. In this way the campaign hopes to show that the solution is possible and in the hands of all and that to reach it requires a joint effort. The campaign visuals include a bank account number for donations and an internet address for online donations: www.baasgalgo.com.

The initiative has been supported by Scalibor (www.scalibor.es) who are strongly committed to animal health and welfare. The campaign is equally grateful for the expert collaboration of Atlantis Target (www.atlantistarget.com) for all photographic aspects, and the Bigfoot Veterinary Communication advertising agency (www.bigfootcomunicacion.com).

It is estimated that every year in Spain thousands of Galgos are the victims of great cruelty and abuse. In many cases, the dogs that are no longer considered useful by hunters are abandoned or cruelly slaughtered. Although no official data exists, the Galgo animal defence associations believe that approximately 40,000 Galgos are ‘destroyed’ every year.  Ignorance, fear of reprisals when denouncing dog-owners and the lack of clear and enforceable legislation to protect animal rights and welfare, greatly contribute to the problem.

According to the Affinity Foundation, 118,000 dogs were abandoned in our country during 2008. Spain continues
to be by far the worst country in Europe in terms of animal neglect. A very small number of dogs that are mistreated and abandoned in Spain are thankfully adopted from other EU countries such as Holland, Belgium, Germany France, Italy and Switzerland. The Baas Galgo Association has been working for many years to save the Galgos and change public perception of them and has managed to facilitate many adoptions of Spanish Galgos in other European countries.

About Baas Galgo.

The Baas Galgo Association is a volunteer group which was created ten years ago to defend and promote animal rights and animal welfare, above all for Galgos. This association is known for their keen initiative and innovative ideas in favour of animal causes. In 2009 they released their first solidarity calendar for the Galgos with the collaboration of
such renowned celebrities as the Baroness Thyssen, the singer Amaya Montero or the actor Gabino Diego, to name but a few. The Baas Galgo Association aims to renew the calendar in 2010 with the support of more than 20 famous faces. As in 2009 all proceeds will go to help the Galgos, aid for the refuges, animal healthcare for mistreated and abandoned Galgos, and supporting other associations and animal shelters. The association runs an animal refuge in the province of Cordoba, where more than 60 abandoned dogs hope each day that some kind, serious and loving people will come and adopt them. The Baas Galgo Association also promotes a great number of social awareness actions for animal rights and animal welfare.

“FROM HEAVEN TO HELL” this book is a must for galgo lovers!

22 May

http://www.craigmcginty.com/.a/6a00d8341c7e8653ef0133ee09188d970b-pi

14th June 2010 is the date for the printed copy of my book. Available to order through Scoot Books now.

Here’s Chapter 1 as a taster.

Origin of ‘Galgo Espanol’

The bitch cowered in a corner of the derelict building, eyes dull but fearful, her skeletal body covered in scars, protecting her puppies struggling vainly to suckle from her malnourished frame. The woman stood quietly, her eyes adjusting to gloomy light, observing the scene before her eyes. If she could gain the bitch’s trust, approach with food and water, then there was a chance that she could catch her and take her back to the shelter……and then, as the bitch turned, the woman saw the dog could barely move, not only had the bitch 8 puppies to care for, she had injuries to her front legs…………
How has a descendent of such a noble breed of dog come to be regarded as ‘vermin’ in the eyes of the Spanish and abandoned in this way?

Several explanations are put forward regarding the history of the Galgo Espanol , or Spanish Greyhound, but one thing upon which everyone is agreed is that it is an ancient breed of dog, specifically a member of the sighthound family, so called because they hunt by sight rather than by nose.

The origin of the word ‘galgo’ could derive from the Gauls, an ancient tribe of Celts, who migrated across Europe and down into the Iberian Peninsula around 500BC. A search through the Celtic language will suggest ‘Celtic’ is a word with an heroic meaning. Cuchulainn is a heroic figure in Irish mythology; Cu means ‘hound’ – so ‘hound of Chulainn.

Another theory is that the Romans found a breed of dog in Spain called ‘Canus Galicus’ – or Celtic dog – in the Galicia area of Spain which, in Spanish pronunciation, would be ‘galico’, shortened to ‘galgo’, ‘Gaze hounds’ is a term for the dogs used to hunt hare by the Ancient Greeks, possibly the word ‘greyhound’ developed from this.
In all instances, the ‘hound’ had to be a dog built to outrun its quarry with speeds of up to 40mph, alongside a hunter on horseback or in a chariot.

Earliest indications of the existence of the Galgo Espanol

Greek art and coins depict short-haired hounds, some claim these are the ancestors of the Ibizan hound or Podenco, rather than the galgo, and in 325BC or thereabouts the Macedonian monarch Alexander the Great reportedly had a hound named Peritas accompany him on his military campaigns. A scene often depicted in Greek and Roman art is the mythical tale of the goddess Artemis bathing in a river. A human named Actaeon, accompanied by his hounds, saw her, so she punished him by turning him into a stag and had him hunted down by his hounds.

Research also produced the fact that the only breed of dog mentioned by name in the Bible is the greyhound (Proverbs 30:39-31, King James version.

There be three things which do well, year, Which are comely in going; A lion, which is strongest among beasts and Turneth not away from any; a greyhound; A he-goat also.’

So, we have the Gauls moving into Spain with hounds; we have Ancient Greeks with hounds; we have Romans with hounds. We also have the Ancient Egyptians with hounds, which were used both for hunting and as companions. They were the only dog permitted to share the tent of an Arab, and to ride atop their camels. The birth of such a hound was second only in importance to the birth of a son.

When their owner died, a favourite hound would be mummified and buried with them, as is illustrated on the walls of Egyptian tombs. Rekhma Ra (1400BC), and pharoahs Tutankhamen, Amenhotep II, Queen Hatshepsut and Cleopatra VII also owned greyhound-type dogs – which leads us to the development of the pharaoh hound’ – a smaller close relation of the greyhound

Having told the tale of the Greek goddess Artemis, the Romans have the goddess Diana who hunted with hounds, and in a popular Roman story she gives a greyhound named Lelaps to her good friend Procris. Procris takes him hunting and before long they spot a hare. Unfortunately for Lelaps, the gods didn’t want the hare to be caught and turned both Lelaps and the hare into stone: another scene common in Roman art.

A further theory is that, probably between 800-1400AD, Arab and Berber invaders crossed the Mediterranean into Spain, and brought their hunting dogs, Saluki and Sloughi, with them, together with their falcons. The saluki is a very fine-boned sighthound, the sloughi more sturdy, but it is believed that these dogs, together with the Celtic hounds, formed the basis for the Galgo Espanol, the perfect partner for the falcon bird of prey.

Life Changes in Spain

15th century Spain was made up of five independent kingdoms; Portugal, Navarre, Castile, Aragon, and Granada. In 1469 Isabella, heiress of Castile, married Ferdinand, heir to the throne of Aragon. By 1512 Granada and Navarre had been annexed and Spain as we know it now was established.

As Christians, they drove the Jews and Muslims out of Spain and authorised the establishment of monasteries and castles around the country. The clergy themselves became a strong social class, after the aristocracy and nobility, the remainder of the population, some 90%, survived as unskilled cattlemen and farmers, paying rents and taxes to the clergy or the Crown.

As in Britain, hunting with hounds was the prerogative of the aristocracy, especially the Royal Families. In Spain, the national hero Diego Diaz de Vivar (El Cid) used galgo hounds for hunting. The galgo was held in great esteem and if one was stolen, the thief paid with his life. This penalty was set out in the Fuero (Code of Laws) of Salamanca in the 9th century, Fuero of Cuenca, Fuero of Zorita de los Canes, Fueros of Molina of Aragon and Fuero de Usagre in the 12th century.

The result of this increase in farming, especially with cattle and sheep, was that land was cleared of forest, great plains were created, and hares and other game became prolific. The aristocracy employed peasants to run their hound kennels and look after the dogs, and sometimes an injured dog or puppy would disappear. Food was scarce, and the peasant population began to hunt with these dogs.

People then started getting together for competitions, known as ‘galgo entertainment’ or ‘carreras en campo’. This encouraged the breeding of power and hunting technique in the dogs, and some were specifically bred as track hounds, with the speed of the greyhound but the hardiness of the celtic ‘galgo’ hound.

This led to the purebred hunting Galgo Espanol being threatened with extinction. In the 1930’s, the lure of professional racing, such as was popular in England, meant that money, fame and honour became more important and so the Galgo Ingles Espanol developed, more like greyhounds, and generally larger than the Galgo Espanol.

It is in rural areas of Spain where stocks of beautiful and typical galgos are to be found. Sadly, the large majority of their hunting owners (galgueros) are not interested in registering the litters. However there are some galgo breeders who are working to restore purebred galgos with pedigrees.

The woman is my friend Lupe, we are both volunteers at the refuge. Lupe came and told us about the bitch, said she was going to try and catch her, and returned to leave food and water. Lupe waited quietly, not moving, not invading the bitch’s space, gaining her trust. Eventually she was able to touch the galga, talking to her all the time to reassure her no harm was meant to either her or her puppies, gaining her trust. And hoping all the while that she would soon be able to rescue them and bring them to a place of safety.

DOG FOUND HUNG IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!

26 Feb

Our podenca HERMINA went missing last saturday (she would never run away, she had either been shut or stolen!!!) and on sunday we went searching for her with 4 quats, several 4wheel drive cars, 2 trial motorbikes and even 2 horses, imagine we did over 1000km all togehter and NO sign from our dear HERMINIA but we then heared in the bar, that near our house a brown white dog was found hanged. You can imagine, I was close to a heartattack so we called the police, they did not know anything, then thanks to the village gossip we wound out where it was and went there. The hanged dog was a breton spaniel, white with brown spots. It had been done on the premises of a company not even 4 km from my house.

we spoke to the person who had reported the case to the police, a very nice man and a big animal lover. He gave me the picture I published as well as a copy of the police report.
Imagine, one of the guy accused lives in MY village, I know this jerk from the bar we take breakfast sometimes, I saw him hunting!!!!
His car was seen on the premises of company where the dog was found, so most probably he has something to do with it… imagine how hard it is to go into the village and have to look into his face and not kicking his balls!
Luckily the Guardia Civil is very helpfull and will do everything to make sure that the case will not be dismissed or archived. Señor Gabriel, the nice man who reported the case  invited us to be added to the “denuncia”, we also asked all refuges and animal welfare organisations to join the cause but as far as I know none has been added to the case yet.

Some friends and animal lovers and Señor Gabriel have promised that we will not rest until this case has been propperly investigated and the people responsable for that will have their courtcase.
On saturday 27th I have been invited to the Guardia Civil in El Vendrell to talk about the investigation and to check if the disappearing of HERMINIA has anything to do with the case because the hunters hated her, saying that she is killing all “their rabbits” on OUR land and insinuating that sooner or later a hunter will misunderstand for a wild boar!!!!

During our search action for HERMINIA we found: 6 abandoned dogs. terribly shy, impossible to take in, all hunting breeds and their mixes, 2 dead dogs runover by cars, 2 shot cats, and over 500 highly contaminating bulletcases

Great news, we have to NANDO! I arrived yesterday in Murcia and already he is in its foster home with our collaborator LORE: here are some pictures of him when arriving and with LAURA. They directly took it to the vets. He is in good health, and we have already removed blood to him for disease tests and we will vaccinate him when we have the results.

THANKS TO BAASGALGO FOR THEIR SUPPORT AGAIN .They say that he is super smart, sociable and calm. Who will adopt our new baby?

What a relief to see him away from that road and looking a little less sad :)

SUSHA: galgo mix dumped in a potato sack!!

11 Feb

SUSHA’S owner threatened our good friend and galgo rescuer LAURA that if she did not take the dog away he would kill her!! This cruel man dragged Susha in a tightly tied sack to Lauras’ house and dumped her there without even checking that she was ok!

Susha is a completley sweet, social, friendly and dear, playful and funny pup and is ready for adoption ;)

Maura: young and playful

11 Feb

MAURA is a playful red coated galga, which always finds something naughty to occupy herself with :)

SHe needs a family with an energetic play mate, and kids would be no problem. She loves it to play and run, therefore a large garden is a must for MAURA. This sweet playful galga comes from the worst region in Spain for galgo cruelty, and was delivered to us by her hunter owner. She is healthy and ready to go at the end of February.
