SIGN PETITION!

please sign the petition against the mistreating and killing of the galgos (spanish greyhounds) and other hunting dogs in Spain!

SIGN HERE: http://guestbooks.netservices.gr/addgb.cgi?name=dogspetition

To the President and the King of Spain,

Affter several hundred thousand of abdandoned and mistreated galgos (spanish greyhounds) and podencos (Ibizan Hounds, Canarian Warrenhounds and Podenco Andaluz) that are abandoned or brutally killed each year, we ask the spanish government to apply the existing animal welfare laws on the breeders and hunters as they are the reason for the massive breeding, mistreatment and distruction of those dogs.

  • We ask for a rigorous control of the breeding facilities, applying the existing laws incl. the one for microchipping, rabies vaccination and the “nucleo zoologico”, (a permit to keep and breed animals according to the existing laws incl. adequate kenneling, veterinary care etc)
  • The existing animal welfare laws should be used to control the backyard breeders and the handlers of hunting dogs.
  • Judges should use the laws to fine hunters and breeders who do not fulfill the existing laws and SEPRONA (environmental police) should inspect hunters and their dogs without informing the person of the coming inspection to avoid the elimination of badly kept animals etc.
  • All hunting dogs must be microchipped for identification purposes
  • All hunting dogs must be vaccinated with rabies and multiple vaccines to avoid diseases
  • All hunting dogs have to be registered by their owners at the local townhall
  • No hunting dogs should be abandoned or killed by their owners
  • Unwanted dogs have to been handed over to the nearest rescue paying a 100Eur fee

We expect a European country like Spain to apply the animal protection laws in favour of the hounds in Spain and we ask the authorities to insist on a control of the hunters, and the inhumane treatment of their dogs has to be eliminated forever.

People have no right to treat these dogs so brutally. When will people ever learn to treat animals with the respect and compassion which they deserve.

    • Eva Eckersberg March 5, 2014 at 9:23 am #

Det är vidrigt hur de behandlar hundarna!! Aldrig skulle jag besöka dessa ställen där man behandlar djur på detta sätt! År 2014 borde man veta bättre!!

  2. Catherine Palombo January 21, 2008 at 7:00 am #

“What comes around goes around” – you will pay eventually for your mis-treatment of these wonderful creatures.

  3. Wendy Jordan January 26, 2008 at 7:33 pm #

The treatment of Spanish hunting dogs – the galgos and the podencos is truly the shame of Spain.

Surely the Spanish government can legislate for more humane treatment of these hounds and enforce penalties when the laws are flouted.

Spain can do better than this.

  4. Brenda Greaves January 26, 2008 at 7:39 pm #

I will never , ever visit Spain as a tourist and will tell other how barbaric and totally disgusting way you treat the lovely galgos and podencos. These dogs have the right to humance and kind treatment. I hope one day all those you have treated these animals so brutally get the same treatment inflicted on them.

  5. Marc Peter January 26, 2008 at 10:05 pm #

the illtreatment of this most wonderful creatures is criminal and i will have nothing to do with spaiin as a holiday spot or even will avoid buying any products that have come from spain. until the laws have been changed and enforced to protect these most wonderful creatures.

It’s a shame what’s happening in Spain with the galgo-dogs.

  7. Jacqueline Southern January 27, 2008 at 10:37 am #

I will ensure that I spread the word about the terrible way these creatures of God are treated by a supposedly Catholic nation and I will do all I can to prevent people I know travelling to Spain as tourists until something is done to stop this.
All living things deserve to be live without fear and suffering and all those who inflict such things onto defenceless creatures should suffer the same fate 4 fold!
    This needs to stop!!!

Good luck! dogs don’t deserve the way we treat them.

  9. Stuart Crompton January 31, 2008 at 11:09 pm #

This CANNOT be allowed to continue anymore!

    How could they?
To look into the trusting eyes of a hound and then commit an act of cruelty?

    Have they no hearts?
    IT’S CRIMINAL – BARBARIC

The Spanish government need to change legislation immediately.

A country is judged by how it treats those unable to protect them selves.

  12. Annette Pemberton February 4, 2008 at 11:40 pm #

Spain considers itself a civilised country? A civilised country would never let such barbaric suffering and cruelty to exist.

The Spanish Government MUST prosecute the people who commit these atrocities on innocent hounds, the sentences must be comesurate with the suffering these ‘people’ cause the Galgos and other hounds in Spain.

The Spanish Government MUST help fund the rescues that do their best to assist and rehabilitate the lucky few.

  13. John Ratcliffe February 5, 2008 at 8:33 am #

This is a culture problem. In the culture of spain it is thought to be alright to treat animals like this. The culture needs to change drastically and I don’t know how to do that except by a complete cleansing by drastic measures. If anyone else knows how to do it differently please do so.

STOP!

The brutality inflicted on these poor creatures is equalled only by Spain’s shocking torture of bulls, and as long as these shameful practices exist,I could not bear to even thinki of visiting this country.
The only thing that gives me the slightest hope is the knowledge that there are many good Spanish people who hate this cruelty as much as we do,and for them I have the greatest respect.

  21. Pia Ogilvie March 11, 2008 at 8:18 am #

Shame on Spain for the total lack of animal welfare. Being part of the Eurpean Community requires respect for animals.
The endless number of abondened and mistreated animals tell their on sad story. The countless numbers of animal welfare org. working their fingers to the bones while trying to help those who suffer in silence tell their desperate story.
Spain, your immediate action is called upon. Shut the perreras, hold animal abusers responsible, listen to the voices of so many people who is only too aware of the sad situation your country is in regarding the animals.
    Do something, do it now!

isn´t it easier to STOP HUNTING???
it´s cruel for the bunnies as well
If hunting was forbidden, the hunters won´t need the dogs any more!

  23. Stud.art Lisbeth Mønsted Larsen May 16, 2008 at 6:45 pm #

My comments are thus. Stop the insurabel cruelty to animals all over spain. Take away the S and you are left with pain wich is what you subject these poor defenceless sighthounds to every day of their short fearfull lives if you can call it that. I would say that for those poor neclected sighthounds it is hell on earth. How long are you going to let them suffer. Stop importing greyhounds from Ireland since you can´tgive your own national breeds a decent and compasionat life. Stop the overbreeding and culling of galgoes and podengoes after the hunting season. I will never set foot in your country as long as you treat life with such contempt. Life is sacred even to catholics why is that so hard for you to understand have you ever heard of “Caritas” latin for compassion.Remember a nation is judged by the way it treats its animals.I will not buy your products or support you in any way before you treat all animals with compassion and dignity things they should have from birth. I do however support the heroes of Spain. Those that make a diffrence every day for the poor neclected sighthounds, other dog breeds mixes, cats strays of all kinds. These are the true heroes of your nation and they should be held in awe of their kindness and compassion. Those are the ones who we should revere and base the future on not you the abusers, killers or worse. Please change your attitudes before it is too late. What if these things were inflicted upon you? how would you like it. I am disgusted with your evil deeds and sad for your victims.None of us can save the world, but we can make a world of diffrence for the one we have adopted.Written in all haste.Yours sincerly Stud.art Lisbeth Mønsted Larsen Greyhound Action Denmark.

As a member of the EU, Spain is accountable to the laws that govern all member states. As a piece of ignorant shit, you are accountable to me, and I hope to help in ensuring moronic bastardos like you never have a chance to own, abuse, use, or have any contact with any animal.
Utter twit, may you have a small life – like your mind

    • Paul McQuinn July 30, 2012 at 3:10 pm #

Luis … so you REALLY believe that what happens in Spain is nobody’s business other than Spaniards? Your ignorance is truly astonishing! The world is watching, and is appalled by the level of cruelty that Spaniards routinely inflict upon vulnerable animals. Being a nation of sadists is not big and it’s not clever: it merely demonstates a total lack of understanding of, and compassion for, other sentient beings.

It is obscene how a country with such low morals concerning animal well-being can be a part of the EU. This is 2008 – today´s people need to realize animals are living, feeling creatures just like humans, they are sincere, loyal and should be treated with respect. Forget apocalypse – Ignorance is what will destroy this planet eventually.

Please stop this cruelty. Humans are not supposed to do this to defensive animals, who would have done anything to please their owners. I have 3 rescue greyhounds and they are the most loving dogs you could have. I am totally ashamed of Spain.

I rehomed a Podencos female from Pro-Galgo Spain in April 2009. Although she had been a breeding bitch for a Spanish Hunter she was still dumped after giving him around 8 litters of pups. She was found and rescued by Mo’s Pro-Galgo Rescue, where she had to stay for 7 months for her Rabies Pet Passport being valid for entry into 7 months. Menta as she has been called, Spanish for Mint, is a White Wired Haired Podencos Andulez Grande. When she came to me she was very timid, she is still very nervous of sudden movements such as raising your hand suddenly, she makes sure she is out of your way if you need to pass the place she has settled down in. She loves my two large Greyhounds and she is now nearly their size and weight. She follows me very closely when we are out walking but these days barks in greeting to other people and dogs.
Compared with the Greyhounds I doubt if she will ever forget the bad treatment she had in spain treated not as a pet but just as a commodity to be got rid of by the nastiest way possible

We left Spain 2 years ago, and one of the main reasons was the treatment of animals. You should inforce the laws, it seems the norm for the police to attend dog/cock fights and take part in the betting! this is not the show of the law people are looking for.

    Horrific

  98. Niki Tsembas March 31, 2013 at 8:04 pm #

The Spanish Government needs to amend laws to protect animals and new laws to punish those who abuse animals…for a modern country you are backwards in your treatment if animals. For a God fearing Catholic country you have no empathy for Gods creatures. One day you will have to answer to your maker…

Stop mistreating and killing of galgos and other hunting dog in Spain.

  103. Gemma Quinton July 11, 2014 at 6:43 am #

The brutality in which these dogs are forced to endure, the neglect & mistreatment, I’m not sure how that can be legal in a civilised country. For people, young & older, to walk by, observe this horrendous act of cruelty & to do absolutely nothing I find absolutely abhorrent.
